What are we reviewing?

This week, the Beauty Squad is reviewing the Bblunt Back to Life Dry Shampoo (for instant freshness) because honestly - who has the time to shampoo every few days and we're all game for anything that allows us a few extra snooze minutes in the morning.

The Bblunt Back to Life Dry Shampoo comes in a stainless steel looking metal spray bottle (very similar to a deodorant bottle) and comes in two sizes- a mini 30ml bottle and a regular sized 125 ml bottle.

How much does it cost?

The Bblunt Back to Life Dry Shampoo mini (30ml) is Rs 250 and the regular size (125ml) is Rs 550.

Intro to product or product category:

Bblunt is India's premiere hairdressing salon and styling academy with over 17 salons across India and the UAE. Brainchild of Adhuna Akhtar (nee Bhabani) Bblunt launched its own range of hair styling, prepping and transformation products in 2014.

Dry shampoos have been steadily gaining popularity in the last few years, however they actually have been around since the 1960s. Some people swear by its powers while others remain skeptical. There are two broad categories of dry shampoos - the spray and the powder. The spray dry shampoos are more popular mainly because of the ease of use. However, if you'd like to make your own powder dry shampoo at home- check out a cool DIY recipe here

How it works & what does the product claim?

A dry shampoo, simply put, is an oil absorbing powder that soaks up excess grease and dirt from your scalp thus allowing you to have fresher hair. Though not recommended to completely substitute shampooing - dry shampoo works to instantly refresh your hair to maintain fresher looking hair between shampoos or to give your limp hair some amount of fullness and texture. It can also be used as a quick pick me up for your hair after long flights, between work and an evening out or even as a styling product since it does help your hair stay in place.

Bblunt claims that instant freshness is now a spray away۝ and their dry shampoo does a smooth job۝ of absorbing excess grease and grime thus resulting in revamped hair in a matter of seconds. Another interesting claim on their packaging is that this product is specifically designed for Indian hair. Yay! Finally! Finally we have a dry shampoo that is designed specifically for indian hair.

Directions for use:

Shake well before use

Hold can in an upright position, six inches away from the hair

Spray evenly, close to the roots

Leave on for two minutes, massage and then brush thoroughly

In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately.

Do's and Don'ts of using dry shampoo:

Spray it at least six inches away from your scalp, this allows for a more even distribution

Wait for two minutes before styling, this allows the powder to work its magic.

Don't use a dry shampoo as a substitute to actual shampooing, missing one shampoo is fine but don't get too lazy.

Don't spray it on wet or damp hair, make sure your hair is completely dry, otherwise the powder is just going to stick to your wet hair.

What we thought: The MSM Beauty Squad totally applauded the BBlunt Dry SHampoo for it's convenience and ease of use, but would heartily recommend you continue to wash your hair the old fashioned way to ensure a truly clean scalp and healthy hair.

Read on to see what each one of us had to say about this product.

Diva (Dry Hair): I used the dry shampoo after a long day at work, during a work related trip. It's a convenient tool for those times when you don't have access to or time for a shower. I found the BBlunt dry shampoo handy for those days when I have been to the gymn and dont have time to take a shower before heading out for the evening.

All in all, I would not recommend it as an alternative to a shower but I have to admit it is a great in-between, non-messy tool when time is at a premium.

Kat (Oily Scalp, Dry Length, Sensitized Ends): I don't really understand dry shampoo or why anyone would forego washing their hair with water and shampoo. But for the purpose of this review I spoke to several people and also used the product on my hair a few times to truly understand this product category.

The hair dressers I spoke with recommended it highly as a great way to counteract a greasy scalp and to thereby help prep hair for styling. My first reaction to that was "well why would you not just wash that greasy scalp to get it really clean".... but never mind, I guess there are days when one is pressed for time and don't really have the time for the full on "wash, shampoo, condition" routine. And apparently, even during the blow drying process some scalps tend to get a bit greasy, which is when the dry shampoo comes in very handy.

Now, even though I have a greasy scalp combined with dry lengths, I did not in all honesty find the dry shampoo a suitable option for a treatment between washes. It did make my hair smell fresher, but did not really make it look or feel any fuller, cleaner or thicker.

However, the one area where i found it to be of great use to me was the day after a blow dry, when my hair tends to start looking a bit limp and low in volume, especially during the high-humidity monsoon season. A few squirts of the product and voila - it got back to the same bouncy volume that it had when I left the salon the day before. The effect was short lived however since I woke up the following morning with my hair back to it's pre - dry shampoo condition.

So, to cut a long story short, I would recommend it as a pick me up for extending the life of a blow dry but not as a regular alternative to a good old shower!

Shaz (Oily Scalp, Dry Ends): To put it out there once again, I have an oily scalp. I wash my hair everyday (if I have plans to go out) or every other day. I have used a dry shampoo before from a supposedly high end brand, which did absolutely nothing for me except make my hair smell nicer. So when I heard about Bblunt's version of dry shampoo, I was more than willing to give it a try. Anything to get me out of having to shampoo ever so often.

I used the dry shampoo on day old washed hair and sprayed it as per the instructions on the packaging. It has a fragrance that strangely reminds me of the air fresheners in fancy hotel toilets - pleasant but also reminiscent of a fancy toilet. Initially, it did leave a light residue (which made me question the claim of it having been designed for Indian hair, cause technically most of us have dark hair). However wait for a couple of minutes and it absorbs pretty well. I must say, it does make the hair look fuller and fresher. On the down side, the effect doesn't last very long. I checked my hair after 3 hours of application and the effect had definitely worn off. The fragrance wears off pretty quickly too.

I used the dry shampoo again a day later on what was now two day old washed hair (which I must add were quite oily) and this time it left more of a residue which didn't absorb quite as well. My hair did not look fuller or fresher, instead felt more weighed down. I decided to end the misery and headed for the shower after an hour of application.

All in all, my recommendation for people who have hair like mine would be to use it as a quick pick me up on a day old hair, if you must.
